March is here and you know what that means, basketball tournament time! The brackets for the upcoming Men’s and Women’s TCCAA/NJCAA Region 7 Basketball Tournament have been released. The action will begin on Monday March 6th and play through until the championship game on Friday March 10th. This year the tournament is being played in Morristown, Tennessee at Walters State Community College.
In both tournaments each team is playing for the conference title and a automatic berth into the NJCAA National Tournament. If the team that wins the conference regular season title happens to win the conference tournament as well then the 2nd place team in the tournament will get the automatic berth. Motlow State won the Men’s regular season title and Walters State won the Women’s regular season title. Both of those teams have already secured their spot in the National Tournament.
The Chattanooga State Tigers ended the regular season with a 16-12, 9-9 record. The Tigers are the 6 seed in the tournament and will tip-off vs Southwest Tennessee on Wednesday March 8th at 8 p.m. Chattanooga State ended the regular season last Saturday with a 88-75 loss to Southwest Tennessee. Earlier in the season Chattanooga State was able to upset Southwest Tennessee with a 63-57 win.
If Chattanooga State is able to get the win and advance to the next round then they will face off against the winner of the Walters State vs Cleveland State/Dyersburg State game. Luckily for the Tigers, they have already won games against all 3 of their potential opponents. A win in that round and the Tigers would find themselves in the Championship game.
Another thing that works in the favor of Chattanooga State is the fact that they are on the opposite side of the bracket then regular season champion, Motlow State. With just two wins in the tournament and a match-up against Motlow State in the Championship game, the Tigers will find themselves moving on to the National Tournament.
The Chattanooga State Lady Tigers wrapped up their regular season with a 83-60 loss last Saturday at Southwest Tennessee. The Lady Tigers hold a record of 8-18, 5-13. The Lady Tigers are the 8 seed in the tournament and will be kicking the tournament off in game number 1 on Monday March 6th at 2 p.m. Chattanooga State will be up against Volunteer State Community College.
The Lady Tigers won both match-ups in the regular season against Volunteer State with 56-51, and 76-70 victories. With a win the Lady Tigers would move on to play the regular season champions Walters State. Chattanooga State’s only hope to move on to the National Tournament would be to upset Walters State and then move on to win the whole tournament and gain the automatic berth.
