Chattanooga State Suffer First Loss of the Season

Chattanooga State men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Monday night, 87-84 to the visiting Snead State Community College, after blowing a 20 point lead in the second half.

The Tigers of Chattanooga State led the game 49-36 at the half after a beautiful corner 3 pointer by Cade Crosland at the buzzer. A key to the Tigers success in the first half was their dominance on the offensive glass and their second chance opportunities. Orlando Moore led all scorers with 12 points at the half for the Tigers.

Chattanooga started the second half where they left off. Chattanooga State’s biggest lead of the night was 20 when leading 63-43 with 16 minutes remaining. But for the third straight game the Tigers let their lead slip away in the second half, this time allowing Snead State to climb back in the game. Chattanooga State was outscored 51-35 in the second half. Snead State was able to go on a 31 to 11 run and tie the game at 74 with 5:54 remaining thanks to their ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc and from the free throw line.  Then after Chattanooga State tuned the ball over on their next possession Snead State went down the floor and took the lead 76-74 with 5:20 remaining.

Chattanooga State began to panic on their next few possessions and rushed their shots and gave the ball right back to Snead State. The Parsons were able to grow their lead to 83-77 with 3:22 remaining. A couple of heroic 3 pointers by Devlyn Williams helped the Tigers pull within two at 86-84 with 9.7 seconds left. After the Tigers fouled and Kyante Pines went 1 of 2 from the free- throw line, Joe Gordon ran the floor and had one last attempt at a game tying 3 for the tigers. The shot bounced off the rim and time expired.

Chattanooga State is now 5-1 on the season while Snead State moves to 2-4. Chattanooga State returns to the hardwood at Jackson State Community College on Friday for a chance to go 3-0 in conference play.
