The weekly NJCAA Division 1 Men’s basketball rankings came out Tuesday and Walters State Community College was ranked #13. The Senators of Walters State were 15-1 and in first place in the TCCAA conference. The Senators had gone on a 15 game winning streak before falling to Motlow State Community College last week for their first defeat of the season.
Tuesday night Chattanooga State came into town to take on the Senators. Chattanooga State sat in second place in the conference behind Walters State, only one game back. Chattanooga State was riding a 4 game winning streak and playing against a ranked opponent wasn’t something new for the Tigers. Earlier in the season Chattanooga State took down #7 Southwest Tennessee. A win in Morristown for the Tigers would result in a tie for first place in the conference.
Chattanooga State had no trouble keeping up with Walters State and led 37-35 at halftime on the road. Chattanooga State was 3-3 with road games this season but were headed for another road win with the lead at the half. At the 10:54 mark of the second half the Tigers were still in control with a 52-47 advantage. The Tigers were able to hold on for their 5th straight win with the 63-60 victory.
Now Chattanooga State has a 10-5, 6-2 record and sits tied for first place in the TCCAA conference with Walters State and Motlow State. The Tigers hold the tie breaker though thanks to wins over both those teams this season. Chattanooga State still has to face both of those teams with a match-up away against Motlow State on February 3rd and then a home game against Walters State on February 15th. Chattanooga State still has a total of 10 conference games left to play.
