Chattanooga has its fair share of non chain pizza restaurants. Our cup runs over with a hearty selection of mom and pops to satisfy that craving for sauce laden, cheesy goodness which only a pizza can fill. However, I’m a simple man with simple tastes. I’ll take a good old slice of classic pizza over the pretentious pies some establishments around town have become famous for.
St. Elmo, which borders the south side of downtown Chattanooga, is home to an array of small businesses and restaurants that have plenty to offer. Next time you take a visit to Rock City, Ruby Falls, or the Incline, stop by Mr. T’s Pizza and Ice Cream at the foot of the mountain directly across from the incline. My friends and I have eaten here for years and consider it one of if not the best place to get pizza in the city. You will leave with enough food to eat for two or three days at a more than fair price on par with or lower than most chain restaurants.
Mr. T’s is never a let down. All it takes to make a great pizza is fresh and simple ingredients. Mr. T’s makes its dough and sauce from scratch daily, as well as using fresh vegetables for toppings and salads. There is nothing extravagant about the menu: no crazy sauces, no eccentric specialty pies, and no gaudy cheeses. Pick the size of your pie and pick your toppings; it’s that simple. Mr. T’s also offers breadsticks, salads, wings, and sandwiches if you’re not in the mood for pizza.
Let’s not forget about the ice cream either; it is in the title after all. Mr. T’s offers 20 flavors sold by the cone, the cup or the pint. The ice cream here is very delicious, and the restaurant doesn’t skimp on the portion size. You get every bit of what you pay for. My personal favorites are cookies and cream or mint chocolate chip. The selection here is as simple as the pizza choices. Mr. T’s sticks with the basics and focuses on delivering the flavor instead of the flair.
There is a reason Mr. T’s has a die hard, loyal base of customers. The staff is very friendly, the food is simple, and it all comes at a good price. Mr. T’s offers pick up specials, as well as delivery when two pizzas are purchased. Expect a pie, drink, and ice cream to run $10-20 when dining in, depending on the size of the pizza and the toppings. Next time you’re looking for a fun, cheap date or just a good slice of pizza with friends, visit Mr. T’s. You’ll get a good view of the Incline and an even better meal.
