Gameday: Tigers and Cougars Clash in Conference Play

The Tigers of Chattanooga State, started the second half of the 2016-17 basketball season Thursday night at home vs Faulkner State Community College, winning 96-82. The 96 points the Tigers put on the scoreboard was their most since back on November 9th when they scored 109 in a win against Union College. The team now averages 87.7 points per game, which is 5th best in the conference.

With the win Thursday night the Tigers improved to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The 8-5 record has the team riding a 3 game winning streak after the team suffered a 5 game losing skid as the season hung in the balance with conference play approaching. Which you can read about Here. Now the team sits tied with Cleveland State for second place in the conference.

Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. the Tigers of Chattanooga State and the Cougars of Cleveland State clash in TCCAA conference play. This is the first time the two teams have faced each other this season. The two teams will meet again on March 11th as Cleveland State host that match-up. During Saturday’s game the teams will be playing for complete control of second place in the conference behind 15-1 Walters State.

Chattanooga State has played 13 games this season (8-5) while Cleveland State has only played 11 games (9-2). Chattanooga State is 5-2 at home while Cleveland State is 3-1 on the road. One thing that might come into play with this game is the fact that Cleveland State had their game vs Walters State last Saturday cancelled. The Cougars haven’t played a game since their win back on December 8th vs Gadsden State. Chattanooga State just played on Thursday.

Three of Chattanooga State’s five losses came against teams that Cleveland State has beat this season. Chattanooga State lost to Snead State 87-84, Jackson State 76-73, and Snead State again 83-66. Cleveland State beat Snead State 69-63 and 82-68, and they beat Jackson State 84-78. Cleveland State fell to Motlow State 80-70 while Chattanooga State was able to win 82-74.

When breaking down stats from previous games this season Chattanooga State holds the advance in several key areas. Chattanooga State is averaging 87.7 points a game vs Cleveland State’s 80.8. Chattanooga State also holds the advantage when it comes to shooting percentage. The Tigers are shooting 50.1% from the floor while the Cougars are shooting 44.5%. Chattanooga State also leads when it comes to assists per game with 17.7 while Cleveland State is averaging 13.

Cleveland State holds the edge when it comes to 3 point shooting, making 36.6% of their shots from behind the arc while Chattanooga State shoots 34.7%. The Cougars are also a better free-throw shooting team making 68% from the line. Chattanooga State is shooting 62.3% from the line. Cleveland State holds the advance when it comes to rebounds per game as well. Cougars are averaging 40.3 rebounds a game compared to the Tigers 37.2

Two players to keep a eye on in the game Saturday is Chattanooga State’s sophomore power forward #40 Dav Moore who is averaging 13.7 points a game and Cleveland State’s Sophomore Forward #21 Elijah Weems who is averaging 19.1 points a game. Expect both of these players to have huge games and try to get their team the win,
